I just received in today’s mail a hockey stick signed by the 1965-66 Victoria Maple Leaf championship team. I just had a look at it and all the names are there. Just looking at them brings back memories. How much simpler life was back then. This was my first purchase on Kijiji and it will not be my last. Along with researching for my book, I am accumulating a nice collection of hockey memorabilia. The postal delivery man could not believe that the stick was for a female. He though only men liked hockey. What planet does he live on??Image

I have finally finished cataloging Bob Barlow’s collection of newspaper clippings and photographs. Using old newspapers on microfilm at the Greater Victoria Public Library, I was able to date all the Victoria newspaper clippings, and using the Society for International Hockey Research database, was able to date the out-of-town clippings and make sense out of all the material. It is now stored in an archival quality scrapbook and should last for years. It was really fun to go through all these clippings and it brought back so many memories.

I have not been very regular about posting. I am still working on old newspapers. Who knew how many articles there were in the old papers? The problem is I keep getting distracted reading old headines not connected with hockey.

I am working my way slowly through the Victoria Maple Leaf articles and am having fun identifiying the ones from Bob Barlow’s collection. I promised to date and organize his clippings and am making good progress with them.

I particularly enjoyed the coverage of the Leafs returning home after winning the Patrick Trophy in Portland. As I was on my way home in my car, I missed all the excitement at home. I took some Super 8 video of the last game in Portland but somehow it has gone astray in the last 50 years. I live in hope that I will find it soon. I think I was the only Victoria fan in that huge Portland arena and it felt good to win.

I will switch my research base to the UVic library as their prices for copies of old microfilm are much cheaper than at the public library – and I have hundreds of pages to copy.
